CAMDEN Council will invite key government ministers to meet face-to-face with the community to discuss the impact of the proposed M9 Outer Sydney Orbital.

The council unanimously supported a motion by Labor Cr Cindy Cagney, triggering a community showdown expected to take place at Camden Civic Centre in late May.

Shadow spokesmen will also be invited, with councillors determined to provide a united message to ensure residents concerns are prioritised.

Liberal Cr Peter Sidgreaves, who amended Cr Cagney’s motion to extend the invitation to the Opposition, said it was not a time for politics.

“We are doing this to get the best outcome for the community,” Cr Sidgreaves said.

“I don’t want politics brought into it, just plainly talking about it.”

The motion was supported by Independent Cr Eva Campbell who said: “The opportunity for interchange of ideas and civil debate is very important.”

The NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance, Minister for Planning, Housing and Special Minister of State Anthony Roberts will be invited as a priority, along with Opposition MPs.

Western Sydney Minister Stuart Ayres and Local Government Minister Gabrielle Upton will also receive invitations.

Labor Cr Paul Farrow said it will be a welcome relief to have the decision makers directly consult with the community.

“I too, have attended many community sessions and thought it was good having Transport for NSW; it would be good to have the decision makers there,” he said.

“It’s the people in power who will make the decision. They are the ones who have outlined the corridor. They are the ones who will determine where it ends up. It is time we get the decision makers in the room.”

Camden Mayor Lara Symkowiak met with Western Sydney Minister Stuart Ayres on Tuesday, discussing issues of the M9 Outer Sydney Orbital.

“I appreciate the Minister allowing me over an hour of his time to represent the concerns my residents have expressed over the last month about the M9 Orbital,” Cr Symkowiak posted on Facebook.

“The Minister was very receptive and reassured me all options raised in submissions were being considered.

“ I left that meeting very confident there will be significant changes made to the proposed corridor as a result of our community feedback.”

Camden Council will also write to the NSW Government seeking a response on a number of issues including if developers had prior knowledge to information about the M9 Outer Sydney Orbital and the future expectations of land use in areas surrounding the recommended corridor.

Council also has requested a commitment to preserving agricultural enterprise and assets in the affected areas.
