The transformation of Leppington from paddock to pavement has reached overdrive with plans to deliver 11,000 new homes and 11,000 jobs as part of a major planning proposal.

A joint plan – which is on public exhibition – devised by Camden and Liverpool councils, includes tall buildings, town squares, and sports fields among many other features.

The draft proposal could include up to 11,000 new apartments and townhouses over the next 20 years and 11,000 jobs.

The town centre is located 20km from the future Western Sydney International Airport, between the growing regions of Camden and Liverpool.

Community facilities and schools, along with new urban streets and plazas, cycleways, busways and pedestrian laneways are also earmarked in the plan.

As part of community consultation, Camden and Liverpool councils will conduct an “extensive program” of community engagement activities.

Camden mayor Ashleigh Cagney said it will make Leppington a destination.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a vibrant, attractive town centre that will be a home for generations,” she said.

“The vision is for Leppington to become a thriving town centre with a mix of homes, shops, open space and community facilities, connected to the Aerotropolis and located within the heart of the Western Parkland City.”

Liverpool mayor Ned Mannoun said Sydney southwest was growing into an economic powerhouse.

“With 400 people moving to the south-west every week this will provide much needed jobs and housing,” he said.

“The draft proposal, if adopted, will see Leppington Town centre transformed into a vibrant area. We have seen the success of Edmondson Park – we need Leppington to be better than that, in order to cater to the needs of a rapidly growing population.”
