A CLOUD remains over the future of a proposed 1700-lot development at Mount Gilead pending a Land and Environment Court decision and a bid to have the site heritage listed.
A group of residents under the banner of Help Save Mount Gilead Inc have taken their David vs Goliaths battle to “invalidate” the State Government’s rezoning of a 210ha portion of the estate, in South Campbelltown, to the Land and Environment Court.
A three-day hearing against developer Lendlease and Mount Gilead Pty Limited concluded on Thursday and Justice Timothy Moore has now reserved his judgment.
Meanwhile, a proposal to have the estate placed on the NSW Heritage Register remains under consideration following the closure of the public comment period also on Thursday.
Help Save Mount Gilead Inc communications officer Erik Rakowski said a determination by the NSW Heritage Council was anticipated in a month or so while a Land and Environment Court judgment could be two or three months away.
“We’re very optimistic,’’ he said of the outcome of both matters.
Help Save Mount Gilead Inc public officer Sue Gay said many individuals had worked tirelessly and members endeavoured to protect the “historic farm and biodiverse region from a tsunami of black roofs’’.
Mrs Gay said at its core, the campaign had aimed to keep South Campbelltown, Appin and Greater Macarthur green.
