A teenager has been charged in relation to a number of knives, a semiautomatic rifle, a pistol, and child abuse material after he allegedly intimidated two young girls in a public place.

Kyle Zammit, 18, appeared in Picton Court on Friday after being charged with possession of child abuse material, an unauthorised weapon and a prohibited firearm in addition to carrying cutting weapon and two counts of intimidation.

Court documents reveal the Mount Annan resident was charged with the whole raft of offences on July 18 last year.

Police allege Mr Zammit came to their attention when he intimidated two young girls in Mount Annan with the intention of causing them fear around 7pm. According to police, the girls were not previously known to the teen and he was carrying three knives at the time.

Police allege he had a military-style knife with a 10cm blade and cord handle, a folding knife with red handle, and a pocket knife with a black carrier in his possession when he was arrested.

As well as the knives, police allege Mr Zammit had two illegal guns on July 18 despite not having a permit.

According to police, he had a black Glock pistol gel blaster with an operational slide and trigger and a gel blaster rifle with an operational trigger and mechanism which appeared to be a semiautomatic rifle.

The court documents state police received intel in 2020 about Mr Zammit’s intention to shoot the weapons.

Later that evening at 10pm, police allege they discovered Mr Zammit possessed 55 images and videos of child sex abuse material. According to police, the material showed children being subjected to torture, cruelty, physical abuse and sexual activity.

The court documents reveal Mr Zammit allegedly committed these offences only four months after becoming an adult.

On Friday the court heard Mr Zammit had pleaded not guilty to the two charges of intimidation, possessing an unauthorised pistol and possessing a prohibited firearm. However, he admitted to carrying cutting weapons when he was arrested on July 18, 2021.

The teen is yet to enter pleas to the charge of possessing child sex abuse material.

The court documents show all of the charges before the court have been certified for the District Court, except the charge of carrying knives which will be taken into account as a related charge.

Mr Zammit was granted strict conditional bail, which imposes a curfew and prohibits him from leaving his Mount Annan house unless accompanied by his parents.

He will return to Picton Court on April 8.
