A man has been found dead in the Georges River in Sydney’s south-west, with emergency services called to the scene Sunday afternoon after he failed to resurface.
Emergency services were called to a popular swim location in Sydney’s south-west on Sunday afternoon, following reports of a man failing to resurface from the river.
Officers received the call around 3pm to Kentlyn Basin, near Campbelltown, when concerns were raised regarding the man’s disappearance.
The search initiated by police, SES members and the Police Dive Unit, recovered the 26-year-old man’s body from the water around 4 hours later at 7pm Sunday.
The man had reportedly gone to the popular swim location in Sydney’s south-west for a family day, before the tragic incident took place in the afternoon.
It is suspected that the man was unable to swim and had been using a floatation device which was reportedly impacted by a remote-controlled boat and deflated.
Witnesses at the scene have said he had gone in to recover something for a young girl believed to be his sister, with family soon becoming alarmed when he didn’t resurface.
Family members and witnesses have been left shocked and distraught at the scene following the horrific events.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
