A woman who allegedly spat on a teenage McDonald’s worker after her card failed to work and later claimed to be infected with COVID-19 is planning on entering rehabilitation, a court has heard.
St Andrews woman Kelly Hogan allegedly became aggressive when she couldn’t pay for her order at Eagle Vale McDonald’s last month, which led to her spitting on an 18-year-old girl working at the counter. She is accused of also shattering a glass door at the fast-food restaurant.
The unemployed 51-year-old was arrested and taken to Campbelltown Police Station, where she allegedly told police officers she had coronavirus and coughed in the face of a senior male constable.
Hogan, who has been remanded in custody since the incident on April 29, entered pleas of not guilty to the charges of assault, intentionally destroy property and coughing with COVID-19.
The St Andrews woman did not appear by videolink as the matter was briefly mentioned in Campbelltown Local Court on Monday. Her lawyer told the court Hogan was hopeful of going to a full-time residential rehabilitation centre but the paperwork hadn’t yet arrived.
At the time of the alleged incident, Campbelltown Police Area Command crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Greg Inger said spitting or coughing on people wouldn’t be accepted in the community.
“The actions of spitting on someone is very, very low,” he said. “In the current times, it makes it even worse. That sort of conduct won’t be tolerated.”
Hogan’s matter will return to the same court next week.
