Jarryd Nelson charged with Tahmoor assault, setting ‘stolen’ car on fire

A third man has faced court after police allege he seriously assaulted a man in Tahmoor with two accomplices before setting fire to a car and clothes to hide the evidence.

A third man has faced court after police allege he seriously assaulted a man in Tahmoor with two accomplices before setting fire to a car and clothes to hide the evidence.

Jarryd Luke Nelson, 28, appeared in Picton Court on Wednesday after being charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others, dishonestly destroying property for gain by fire, and false representation resulting in a police investigation.

Police allege the Tahmoor resident was one of three men who attacked a 20-year-old man in a carpark on December 27 about 4.15am.

Emergency services were called to Thirlmere Way following reports of an assault. When they arrived, police found a 20-year-old man suffering serious head and facial injuries.

He was taken to Liverpool Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma for seven days. He has since been released.

Police allege CCTV footage shows a small dark hatchback vehicle at the scene. Police allege they found the car, badly damaged by fire, in a nearby carpark.

Police claim the three men fled the scene and tried to hide the evidence by setting fire to the car caught on CCTV.

Police allege Mr Nelson called the police to report the car as stolen about 2.30am before he and his co-accused lit the blaze. Police allege Mr Nelson also set his clothes alight.

After a public appeal for information, two men were arrested on February 10 and charged with the offences.

Matthew Dean Toovey and Jakob Wiles Ronald, both 26, faced Campbelltown Local Court on February 11 after being charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others and dishonestly for gain damaging property by fire.

After further inquiries, Mr Nelson was arrested at 8am the next day. In his first appearance at Picton Court, the accused represented himself and asked for an adjournment to seek legal advice.

Mr Nelson will return to Picton court on March 2, on the same day as the two co-accused Mr Toovey and Mr Ronald.
