RACING fans turned out in the thousands to Tabcorp Park Menangle for the glitz and glamour of the Inter Dominion Grand Final on Sunday.
While the changing weather kept everyone on their toes, it was champion pacer Beautide who stole the show with a sensational turn of speed to win by an incredible four lengths or 13.9m.
Two other long standing records were smashed on the day with New Zealand mare Adore Me breaking Smokin Up’s Australasian track record and also setting a new world record for mares.
Incredibly in the following race, New Zealand’s Fight For Glory set another world record for three-year-old fillies.
NSW Harness Racing Club chief executive Bruce Christison could scarcely believe how the day unfolded.
“The reaction from the crowd for the world records was amazing,” he said.
“The weather was interesting, we certainly got four seasons in one day.”
In what was a remarkable race and run, Beautide took the long way around and still dominated the classy Inter Dominion field.
Beautide sat outside the three-time New Zealand Cup winner Terror To Love and blew him away with a fabulous win in the $750,000 race.
It raced without cover for almost two miles and outstayed the best field seen in Australia this summer. He ran 1:55.8 in the last mile to beat Flaming Flutter and the fast-finishing For A Reason.
“It wasn’t ideal; he threw a shoe; he was feeling above himself but that’s the way we like to race him,” Beautide trainer-driver James Rattray said. Rattray said there was a good chance he would head to Perth later this year for the next Inter Dominion. “Beau’s given us such a tremendous journey. We love him to death.”
