ALTOUGH Campbelltown football star Heather Garriock was unable to play during the Western Sydney Wanders' 1-1 draw with Adelaide United, she feels at home captaining the Western Sydney Wanderers this season.
The Wanderers salvaged an injury time equaliser through Catherine Cannuli after trailing Adelaide United 1-0, who scored in the 31st minute.
The draw left the Wanderers in fourth place after the opening round.
Garriock, who was raised in Raby and captained the Matildas, joined the Wanderers during their preseason recruitment campaign.
She previously played for rival Sydney FC from 2009-2011 and Swedish side FC Malmo in 2011, before taking time out from the game for the birth of her first child last year.
The Leppington Lions Soccer Club junior is the highest-capped Matilda with 125 appearances for 29 goals.
"I grew up in Campbelltown (and) spent most of my life living here and I'm very proud to be from western Sydney," Garriock said.
"Growing up around here, we didn't get given things on a platter. You needed to work hard and fight for your position, and I'm really glad to be playing for Western Sydney.
"It's a massive honour to captain the Wanderers in my first season playing for the club.
"Being the captain of any side is a big honour and to do it with the Wanderers I'm very, very flattered."
The midfielder, 30, said the Wanderers wanted to take the title from the Sky Blues.
"The goal … is to win the premiership," she said.
Garriock said she would use her experience as a mother and Australia's most capped player to mentor younger players.
"My perspective on football has changed since having a family recently, I'm calmer than I used to be and know I'm a role model to the younger girls," she said.
