A NEW era in education starts on Tuesday when St Gregory’s College welcomes girls for the first time at the new co-educational primary school at Gregory Hills.
A total of 194 boys and girls are enrolled to start their first day at the St Gregory’s College Junior School which is opening for the first time.
“The junior school marks a huge change for St Greogry’s College after 93 years of teaching boys,’’ head of the junior school, Joel Weekes, said.
Year 1 to 6 students are starting on Tuesday and kindergarten starts on Thursday.
“It’s an exciting time and when I look back and think on April 28 last year we started with a blank canvas and since then we have built a new school, it is an amazing achievement,’’ Mr Weekes said.
The junior school will house 194 students, eight classroom teachers, a literacy specialist, librarian and support teachers.
“St Gregory’s College has a well known reputation and our challenge is to exceed those expectations,’’ he said.
“St Gregory’s is known for holistic education, for the chess club, debating, dancing, academic excellence and we will be following those traditions.’’
Mr Weekes said the junior school building featured open collaborative spaces, kindergarten to year 2 classrooms downstairs, year 3 to 6 upstairs and common areas.
It currently has eight classrooms with plans to expand to 16.
