Former Labor MP Mark Latham joins Liberal Democrats to “play a role in fighting for our national values”
Former Werriwa Federal Labor MP Mark Latham has joined the Liberal Democrats Party because he wants to play a role in fighting for “our national values, based on personal freedom and responsibility’’.

FORMER Werriwa Federal Labor MP Mark Latham has announced he has joined the Liberal Democrats Party because he wants to play a role in fighting for “our national values, based on personal freedom and responsibility’’.
Mr Latham, who was also the Federal Oppostion Leader from December 2003 to January 2005, said he supported 80-90 per cent of the Liberal Democrats Party’s platform.
He said this was pretty good for someone with strong views formed over a long period of time.
Mr Latham announced the decision on his Facebook page Mark Latham’s Outsiders yesterday.
“Plus, as a party of freedom, the Liberal Democrats allow room for dissent and diversity of opinion,’’ he said.
“Shorten Labor is only interested in diversity of skin colour, gender and sexuality - Safe Schools BS.’’
The NSW Labor Party has been reported as saying Mr Latham has been banned for life from the ALP.
Mr Latham was previously the Liverpool Mayor in 1991.
He entered federal politics when he won the seat of Werriwa in a by-election in 1994.
Mr Latham then rose to the ranks of Opposition leader but lost the 2004 election and then resigned from the role and also parliament in 2005.
Since leaving politics, Mr Latham has become a political commentator and from December last year to March this year, co-hosted Outsiders on Sky News Live.
His employment at Sky News was terminated on March 29 after a series of controversial comments.
The Macarthur Chronicle has attempted to contact Mr Latham for comment about his decision to join the Liberal Democrats.
