FORMER Campbelltown football star David Carney has returned to the international stage after gaining selection in the Socceroos’ squad to play friendlies against France and Canada later this month.

Carney, 29, was raised in Campbelltown before moving to England at age 16 to join Everton’s youth academy. During Carney’s 46 international caps, he has scored six goals and was a part of the Socceroos 2010 World Cup squad.

The inclusion of Carney as a left back has caused some controversy in Australian football circles, as he has played only four professional games in 2013
for MLS side the New York Red Bulls.

However, Carney told Fox Sports earlier this month he was confident of regaining a green and gold jersey.

“I think when I’m fully fit; I can get that spot back,” he said. “Matt (McKay) is a clever player, and Michael (Zullo) is up and coming.

“I’ve made it harder for myself but Holger (Osieck) is always pushing me. He is happy I’ve signed here (New York), and says he wants
me back in the squad if I’m playing well.”

The match against France will be played in Paris
and shown at 6am AEST, on Saturday, October 12, and the Canada clash at 6am AEST on October 16.
