The Macarthur region has become home to Sydney’s newest sports high school and the region’s first after a multimillion dollar transformation.
Facilities will be constructed at Eagle Vale High School under its talented sports program as part of a $3.6bn government program to deliver new and upgraded schools across western Sydney.
On Monday, Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car said new cricket nets and upgraded change rooms were already available for students.
“This was a commitment to make sure that there was a sports high school offering in this community, in this part of southwestern Sydney,” Ms Car said.
“Sports high schools in NSW have a long and proud tradition of producing some of the very best athletes the world has ever seen. Athletes that we are proud of like Usman Khawaja and Alanna Kennedy – all went to sports high schools here in NSW.”
Construction works are also under way to deliver a new running track, resurfacing the school’s full-sized playing field, new lighting for the sports field, new pickleball courts, a new multipurpose hall, a new health and PE Learning Hub and a new PE Fitness Laboratory.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said investing in sports would also bolster academic success.
“Investment in the sports high school means that more kids get the opportunity to get a great education, but also meet their best potential when it comes to their sporting abilities,” he said.
“This isn’t just about developing the sports stars of the future, although that will happen. It’s also about creating an education for every child in NSW whose parents choose public education.”
Eagle Vale High School principal Craig Butler said the community was excited about the new sports facilities.
“They think it’s wonderful that we’re supporting our kids and showing a commitment to the Macarthur area,’’ he said.
“We are going to have kids who will become Olympic champions and professional athletes, but as a sports high school, we can allow them to manage their studies so they don’t have to make a choice between academic success and sport.”
