A drunk teenage P-plate driver was busted by police after one of her five unrestrained passengers made a rude gesture at police as they drove past at Camden.
Ella Florence Mason, 18, appeared in Picton Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to drink driving with five unrestrained passengers while she was also not wearing a seatbelt.
Police facts state the Camden woman was busted about 2am on November 14 when she was driving through Camden in a blue Ford Falcon with number plates that read CH05EN.
The facts state Mason caught police attention when one of her five unrestrained passengers made a rude gesture at the cop car as they drove by.
Police pulled the car over on Argyle St and retrieved one of the passengers who tried to walk away.
Police saw there were six people in the car, none of whom were wearing seatbelts. To make matters worse, Mason returned a positive result for alcohol during a roadside breath test, despite not being able to drink at all as a holder of a provisional licence.
Back at the police station, Mason returned a blood alcohol result of 0.087 – nearly twice the legal limit for a fully licensed driver.
Mason, who works as a manager at KFC Spring Farm, represented herself in court. She told the court she would not repeat her mistakes and planned to attend university this year.
Magistrate Mark Douglass told the court he saw that type of offence far too often and it could have had a disastrous outcome.
“It’s the circumstance when someone could sarcastically say ‘what could go wrong?’,” he said.
However, he noted Mason’s lack of criminal history and good references.
“I accept it’s out of character and this is a one-off,” he said.
“I’m satisfied she won’t come back to court.”
Magistrate Douglass convicted Mason and fined her $400. She is also disqualified from driving for only three months because of her need for a licence for work.
