Camden Council is set to go head to head in the Land and Environment Court with a developer who is proposing to build 143 terraces houses next to Mt Annan Marketplace.
The council held a conciliation conference with the Queensland-based Sunland Group on Wednesday but failed to reach an agreement to address council’s concerns over a range of issues.
“An agreement was not reached by the parties and, as a result, this matter is now listed for a directions hearing at the NSW Land and Environment Court,” a Camden Council spokesman said.
The directions hearing will be held next Thursday.
The court previously ruled in the council’s favour when the site’s previous owner, Dyldam Group Projects, attempted to build 16 three-storey buildings containing 246 apartments. The developer had originally proposed four-storey buildings for the site.
A number of residents opposed to the current proposal have outlined their fears about an increase in traffic and density of housing which would be created by the development.
Resident Paul Jackson told the developers and council at the public meeting on Wednesday morning that the proposal was akin to a “mini-city” within Mt Annan.
“What is proposed is highly dense and completely out of character with the prevailing dwellings,” Mr Jackson said.
“It is a mini-city within a suburb that is already at its limits.”
Brett Lyons said residents already found it difficult to get out of the suburb and on to Narellan Rd during peak hours.
“They’ve only recently completed upgrades to Narellan Rd but if this goes ahead we’ll be back to square one,” he said.
