Council investigates moving sites for Campbelltown Sport and Health Centre of Excellence

A $23.6 million Campbelltown sports and health facility could be on the move after a more enticing funding opportunity arose to create an elite athletics hub.

The project has been a long time coming, but there could be another hurdle in the completion of Campbelltown’s Sports and Health Centre of Excellence, earmarked for Macarthur Heights.

Described as a training, health and research facility, the hub is set to house a gym, elite training space, health and research facilities, and Macarthur FC’s administration base.

Macarthur Heights had been identified as the location of the $23.6 million project since it was first considered in 2016 and the project has been jointly funded by the Australian Government, Western Sydney University and Campbelltown Council.

However, a statement from the council said the Campbelltown Sports Stadium at Leumeah was being considered as a potential site of the facility following the availability of a funding opportunity.

“The project has been placed on hold while council explores potentially relocating the centre to the stadium to attract more funding and deliver a comprehensive elite sports facility that would meet the elite training needs of the sporting community now and in the future,” the statement said.

“Consideration will also be given to how it aligns with the Reimagining Campbelltown City Centre Master Plan (2020) and the current commitments and needs of the project partners.

“The development of new sports fields at the Macarthur Heights site will continue to be delivered in accordance with a Voluntary Planning Agreement with Landcom.”

It is not clear which entity presented the new funding offer.

The first sod was turned on the Campbelltown Centre of Sport and Health Excellence on October 28, 2019 since then initial landscaping works have taken place but construction of the facility has not started.

It was projected in 2019 that the construction of the complex was to be complete by June 2021 and provide 141 jobs during construction.

The council’s statement said the outcome of the funding opportunity should be known by April and a report of all options would be presented to the council for its consideration soon after.

It is not confirmed whether Macarthur FC will be based at the centre should the facility be moved to Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
