A teenager has been sentenced for doing illegal burnouts in the middle of the road after leaving a McDonald’s in Sydney’s southwest while police officers watched on.
Cooper James Orton, 19, appeared at Picton Local Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to one charge of prolong, sustain loss of traction.
Orton was leaving the carpark at Camden McDonald’s at 9.50pm on March 16 in a Holden Commodore when he accelerated harshly out of the driveway, court documents state.
The teenager then turned left onto Edwards St but due to the strong acceleration his rear wheels lost traction with the road.
According to court documents, he continued to accelerate, causing his car to drift towards the centre of the road.
Orton, who is a third year apprentice, continued the behaviour while steering to the left, making the back of his car drift back towards the side gutter.
He then again steered right which made the back of the car drift back towards the centre of the road.
The erratic driving was witnessed by two police officers and captured on their in-car video as they drove behind Orton at the time of the offending.
Police approached him and asked why he was driving in such a manner.
“The boys at maccas was (sic) egging me on,” he told police, according to court documents.
Magistrate Mark Douglass described the offending as serious and dangerous.
“If it was just silly he wouldn’t be here … it’s not silly it’s unlawful and it’s also dangerous,” he said.
“Police are sick of people just blatantly breaching laws.”
Orton was convicted and fined $400, with his license disqualified for one month.
“Pay your fine, no more offences, get stuck into your work and don’t come back to court,” Magistrate Douglass told the teen.
