Construction on the much-needed road that would link Spring Farm and Menangle could be just around the corner.
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) have confirmed a scoping study for the project, dubbed the Spring Farm Parkway, was completed in July.
An RMS spokeswoman said the NSW Government had allocated $30 million in the 2016 budget to fund planning for the road.
“Essential investigation work and studies are being carried out at several locations around the suburbs of Menangle Park and Spring Farm to help refine the design for the proposed Spring Farm Parkway.”
According to the RMS website, the first stage of the project would connect the Menangle Park development area to Menangle Rd and the Hume Highway with north facing on/off ramps.
It is set for completion in the early 2020s.
But Campbelltown state Labor MP Greg Warren, who was recently appointed to the NSW Parliament’s Legislative Assembly Committee on Transport and In frastructure, said the first stage did not go far enough.
“We need a north facing entry and a south facing exit (to the Hume Highway) in the first stage,” he said.
“This was a 2015 promise and I believe the Narellan Rd upgrades shouldn’t have started until we had started Spring Farm with a connection through to Appin because it’s just not solving our congestion problems.
“People in the new Camden suburbs are avoiding Narellan Rd and using Menangle to travel already and I saw the traffic to turn onto Menangle Rd the other day was stretched back about a kilometre and a half.”
Camden state Liberal MP Chris Patterson said now that the scoping study had been completed, starting construction was among the government’s top priorities.
“It’s a vital piece of infrastructure but it will be a small piece in the wheel of what needs to be done, it’s not a silver bullet,” he said.
“We’ve got The Northern Rd being done and Gregory Hills Drive and Narellan Rd and these are all vital projects.”
Mr Patterson said he would be pushing to have the road finished as soon as possible. “We don’t want another Narellan Rd,” he said.
Campbelltown Mayor George Brticevic said the addition of on and off ramps connecting the road to the Hume Highway were essential.
“It will help relieve the pain of Narellan Rd and Gregory Hills Drive when it opens,” he said.
“People need other options to get on to the motorway.
