Close to 50 people have tested positive to COVID-19 in the southwest Sydney, as the number of confirmed cases in NSW rises to 1219.

Health NSW data has revealed Liverpool is the coronavirus epicentre in the Sydney’s southwest as of 8pm Wednesday, with 17 confirmed cases in the area.

There has been 15 positive COVID-19 tests in the Camden area, a dozen confirmed cases in the Campbelltown area with the Wollondilly region relatively untouched at this stage, with between one to four cases confirmed.

The South West Sydney Local Health District, which includes Campbelltown, Fairfield, Liverpool, Bankstown, Camden and Bowral hospitals, has had 88 confirmed cases in total.

A small number of positive tests in the Campbelltown and Liverpool areas are believed to have been locally-acquired.

A childcare worker at Smeaton Grange Young Academics Child Care Centre was recently confirmed as testing positive to COVID-19, with all staff and children who visited the centre between March 2 and 16 told to self-isolate.

The centre is expected to reopen on Monday.

Twelve people have died across the country as a result of the pandemic, with the number of confirmed cases in NSW doubling in the last four days.

On Thursday morning, the state government announced it hadn’t ruled out introducing tougher lockdown measures in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says “NSW will have to go further” if the number of positive coronavirus cases continues to rise.

HEALTH AUTHORITIES PLEA

■ clean your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub

■ cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with tissue or a flexed elbow

■ avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms

■ stay home if you are sick

■ keep your distance from others as much as possible by social distancing
