Concerned neighbours risk fire to help homeowner on Yarra Rd, Bargo

Concerned neighbours have broken into a burning southwest Sydney house in an effort to help the homeowner, unaware they were out at the time.

Concerned neighbours have broken into a house engulfed in flames, fearing the occupants were trapped in the Sydney southwest home.

The house was fortunately empty when the blaze took hold on Tuesday afternoon, with the owner rushing back shortly after receiving news of the incident.

Police arrived first on the scene, where officers assisted bystanders and residents who came home to find the house ablaze.

Five trucks and 31 firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire and Rescue subsequently arrived at Yarra Rd, Bargo, about 2.30pm in an effort to save the single-storey house, which was visibly damaged.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a woman for smoke inhalation and assessed a number of others.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze by 3.30pm but were set remain on the scene for some time to ensure there was no risk of the inferno reigniting.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, with fire investigators and police working to determine what led up to the incident.

People travelling through the area have been urged to stay cautious, with road closures potentially in place as emergency services work to secure the scene.
