Police are calling for information after a truckie’s lucky escape when his truck veered off the Hume Motorway and rolled 40m down a steep embankment in Sydney’s southwest.
The driver of the heavy rigid transport truck was discovered trapped at the bottom of a ditch on Tuesday morning, hours after the vehicle veered off the highway.
Emergency services received reports of a crash on the Hume Motorway near Mittagong around 7am, after a Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) vehicle noticed damage to the road barrier and trees near Church Ave, Colo Vale.
NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire Rescue and SES teams used heavy haulage equipment to stabilise the truck which had landed on its roof at the bottom of the ditch.
This enabled paramedics to assess and treat the 32-year-old driver confined in the vehicle.
After working tirelessly for two hours, their combined efforts saw the driver freed from the vehicle before he was carried back up the hill to awaiting NSW Ambulance paramedics for treatment.
Paramedics treated the man for non-life threatening injuries to his legs before transporting him to Liverpool Hospital.
Police said the truck crashed around 3am with the 32-year-old driver trapped in the wreckage for hours in the cold and dark, before being eventually sighted by the passing RMS team.
Due to the timing of the incident, heavy traffic was also reported heading northbound along the Hume Motorway near Mittagong, with roads closed for over three hours on Tuesday.
Hume District Police have commenced investigations into the incident, and have asked anyone with information or dashcam/mobile phone footage of the crash to contact Southern Highlands Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
