The extraordinary bravery of five-year-old Chase Green, who was diagnosed with Wilms Tumour a year ago, will power his family’s mission to raise money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Chase, of Elderslie, has endured 16 cycles of chemotherapy and 25 transfusions since his diagnosis but never once lost his “cute infectious smile”.
Seeing his Mum upset after the rare cancer diagnosis, Chase, then age 4, gave her a cuddle and said “Don’t worry Mum, I’m not going anywhere”.
“Being told your child has cancer is absolutely heartbreaking,” Kelly Green said.
“You feel a range of emotions: from sadness to fear.
“It’s a fear of the unknown, then anger takes over — how could this happen to a child, to our child?
“Eventually you come to a stage of acceptance and come together as a family to be the best possible support for Chase.”
Chase is enrolled in kindergarten and aspires to become Australia’s first ninja-cop.
After recently finishing his treatment, it is hoped in a few short weeks Chase will “ring the bell” at the Cancer Centre for Children at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, signalling the beginning of a life free of cancer.
As ambassador of the annual Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson’s Walk for Kids with Cancer, Chase’s family will complete the 27km walk in 12 days, having already raised more than $10,000.
Chase and older sister Kyndra will join to walk the final kilometre.
