An out-of-control knifeman shot by police in broad daylight following a tense standoff near a busy train station has been revealed as a paranoid ice-addict who had been recently released from prison.

Dramatic vision was played before the court of a crazed Robert Hampton, of Blackett, brandishing a knife above his head and yelling wildly after police approached him at Campbelltown train station when he failed to pay his fare in May last year.

He told the police officer “I’m going to f**king stab you” as he fled armed with the large knife, with the footage showing a number of high school students and young families in the vicinity.

After he was chased down in a nearby bus bay, Hampton held the knife above his head and threatened to throw it, before charging at a police officer. He was then shot in the stomach and arrested.

Hampton told Campbelltown District Court on Wednesday that at the time of the violence he wasn’t “all there”, as he was hearing voices in his head and was addicted to ‘ice’.

“I thought there were people after me for things I have done before, people in jail,” he said.

The Blackett man told the court he knew the police officer was doing his job and apologised to anyone who witnessed the violence.

“I know it was his job to arrest me and do what he did to me,” he said. “I didn’t mean for him to have to shoot me. I didn’t have any intention of trying to hurt anyone.”

Hampton said he was a “drug addict” and he would like to attend a residential rehabilitation facility on his release from prison.

He will be sentenced on Friday by Judge Julia Baly, who warned him it would be “a reasonably stern sentence”.
