CAMPBELLTOWN Stadium will be redeveloped into a state-of-the-art all-seater stadium within the next five years if the Macarthur South West Football A-League bid is successful.
The bid team has proposed upgrades to the stadium in its documents submitted to Football Federation Australia as part of the A-League expansion process.
Under the plan, the bid team wants the venue to seat about 18,000 people.
Campbelltown Mayor George Brticevic said today a final design on the stadium hadn’t been finalised.
“If the bid happens then we will be speaking to our local members and to government and look at other sources of funding to upgrade the stadium to an all-seating venue,” Cr Brticevic said.
“The people of Campbelltown own the stadium so there will be a consultation process … the community also owns a lot of land around there so there is that opportunity to create the entertainment precinct that council has put forward as its vision previously.”
Macarthur South West Football Bid co-chairman Gino Marra said the stadium was already capable of hosting a full-time professional team but the bid team wanted to plan for the club’s future needs.
“The stadium is already fit for the needs of the club … this is about future-proofing it for the future needs of a football club we hope will grow with the community,” Mr Marra said.
This week has seen a huge upheaval in FFA as a new board gets set to take over the game in Australia and a new governance model implemented, likely pushing back the October 31 deadline for A-League expansion in the 2019-2020 season.
Mr Marra said the Macarthur South West Football Bid would continue to work as normal until the FFA made any future announcements.
The bid received a boost last week with the announcement that Usain Bolt and the Central Coast Mariners would play a friendly game against a Macarthur South West team at Campbelltown Stadium on October 12.
