Campbelltown Station’s car parking woes may be alleviated, with Campbelltown Labor mayor George Brticevic lobbying for the region’s first satellite parking station.
Cr Brticevic said satellite parking would work in many locations including the newly-opened Gregory Hills Drive.
“I would love to see satellite car parking at Gregory Hills Drive,” he said.
“It can work in many places. A lot of pressure comes from Camden with car parking and we accept that. You can have 1800 spots here at Gregory Hills, you have the land to do so.
“There can be a bus transit service to get people to and from (Campbelltown) station. A five minute bus ride and you are at the station.
“It would be fantastic for the residents of Gregory Hills and Oran Park.”
A recent report by Campbelltown City Council identified 59 per cent of commuters parking at Campbelltown Station were from out of the area.
An additional 441 car parking spaces have been promised for Campbelltown Station, but Cr Brticevic said it wouldn’t be enough.
“In terms of parking, the vast majority come from Camden, Wollondilly and the Southern Highlands,” he said.
“We accept that as we see ourselves as the regional centre. We have seven electrified train stations so of course people want to come and park at our car parks to make their way to work and the city.”
Cr Brticevic previously told the Macarthur Chronicle the electrification of the rail between Campbelltown and Goulburn was needed.
Camden state Liberal MP Chris Patterson said he would not support any discussions, as the land is privately owned.
“Gregory Hills Drive is a fantastic asset the developers has put through but I am not going to support the Marist Brothers to forgo land to fix percieved parking issues without their consultation.”
Campbelltown state Labor MP Greg Warren has recently called for an increase in commuter parking at both Campbelltown and Macarthur train stations.
Marist Bros, the owners of the potential site, have been contacted for comment.
