A southwest Sydney community is in shock after a beloved father-of-three, “well-loved mate” and “compassionate colleague” was killed in a truck crash on the Hume Highway.
Emergency services rushed to the Hume Hwy near the Picton off-ramp after two trucks collided just after 6am Tuesday.
One of the drivers was treated by paramedics but died at the scene and has since been identified as 48-year-old Anthony “Tony” Belfiore, a truck driver for Select Fresh Providores.
Tributes are flowing online for the Campbelltown father and SS Commodore lover, saying the 48-year-old was well-known within the community for his sense of humour.
“I have just received the worst news the accident on the Hume Hwy today took the life of one of our very respected members and a friend to all that knew him,” Craig Goninan wrote on Facebook.
“You will be dearly miss by all. RIP Tony.”
A colleague of Mr Belfiore’s said she was still in disbelief over the accident.
“One of the best men I have worked with and a great caring, compassionate colleague and driver at Select Fresh Providores,” Rita Moses said.
“My heart, thoughts and prayers are with his family and we send our deepest condolences to them.”
Campbelltown Collegians Rugby League Football Club left a touching tribute on social media, saying the club was “deeply saddened and shocked” to hear the devastating news.
“This is a tough post to write and I’m not sure where to start,” the post said.
“Today and always, may fond memories bring you peace, support, and strength. With our love and deepest sympathy as we remember Tony.”
A GoFundMe has been set up by Mr Belfiore’s workplace to support his grieving family.
The fundraiser details his history with Select Fresh Providores, starting with the company in 2015.
“He was a well-loved mate, known for his sense of humour, singing and willingness to help with whatever was required,” the fundraiser reads.
“Throughout these past few weeks, as we all contended with the challenges of Covid, he continued to be a beacon of positivity, checking in with his work mates and contributing to company morale.
“As an essential worker, Anthony never hesitated to show up for work as required, servicing our valued customers in the Canberra region.
“He will be missed every day and our thoughts and prayers are with his 3 kids & wife & family at this difficult time. We want to help Anthony's family in the coming weeks and months.”
The fundraiser has raised more than $40,000 in just one day.
Officers from Camden Police Area Command are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
