It was the craze that swept the world and captured the imagination of young people and 90s tragics seeking a bit of nostalgia.
The Pokemon Go phenomena may have subsided but Campbelltown Council is hopeful it can capture a bit of the lustre, and maybe a Pikachu, with a Pokemon Go event in the region.
Campbelltown Labor councillor Ben Gilholme hopes the city will be able to host an event that will capture a dedicated group of fans still playing the game.
Council staff will now prepare a report investigating whether an event could be held in the area in conjunction with the creators of the Pokemon brand.
Cr Gillholme said the mobile video game remained popular in the region among young people, with one local group of enthusiasts expanding from 30 to 300 people in a matter of months.
“We have a fair few active local players who are in contact with people in other areas,” he said.
“I think if we had an event then we could get those people bringing tourism into the area.
“Just recently there was a worldwide event and you had a couple of hundred people at Mawson Park in the early hours of the morning having fun.”
Cr Gilholme’s idea was unanimously supported by fellow councillors.
