Campbelltown: Fire at abandoned shopping centre on Queen St

Firefighters and police responded to two major fire incidents in Sydney’s southwest one of them located at an abandoned shopping.

Multiple firefighting crews and police responded to a fire at an abandoned shopping centre building around 3pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services responded to reports of a blaze at 32 Queen St,Campbelltown, with eight firetrucks, 32 firefighters and police officers also attending the scene.

A Fire Rescue NSW spokesperson said the fire was discovered among plastic and rubbish in the formerly ‘Brands on Sale’ factory outlet, which had shutdown just one year after first opening over a decade ago.

The blaze was extinguished after an hour of firefighters arriving on-site around 4.30pm, and did not extend further through the building.

The fiery incident also resulted in nearby high school Campbelltown Performing Arts High School having to cancel their school concert due to safety concerns.

The abandoned building is recognisable to many locals as a colourful eyesore located in a prime location, just minutes from Campbelltown station, bus stops and the heart of the CBD.

Plans for a $400 million dollar apartment, retail complex to replace the building were revealed mid-last year but little has been heard since.

Campbelltown Firefighters also responded to a major fire at a townhouse in Claymore on Longstaff Way around 10am on Wednesday morning.

Nearby properties were evacuated as a precaution as dozens of firefighters controlled the blaze which left the two-storey townhouse severely damaged.

Police are investigating both incidents to determine the cause of the fires.
