A REVITALISATION of Minto’s Redfern Park amphitheatre could turn the underused open space into a vibrant hub of local culture.
Campbelltown Council will look into building an open-air stage at the park’s amphitheatre after unanimously backing Labor councillor Masood Chowdhury’s motion.
Cr Chowdhury, a Minto resident, said he hoped the space, which was often left bare on weekends, could become a bustling cultural centre.
“At the moment, nobody is using it,” he said. “It’s a lot of open space and the land gets soggy with a bit of wet weather and the drainage system doesn’t work properly.
“If we construct a proper amphitheatre with seating and stage space with the right drainage and lighting for night activities, then we can do so much more with the space. Minto is an area that has a lot of different cultures and I think it could be used to showcase the cultural performances of community groups.”
Cr Chowdhury said he had inspected other amphitheatre designs around Sydney and would like to see a structure that could hold up to 200 people.
Labor councillor Darcy Lound supported the idea, saying it would continue the work to spruce up Minto.
“It’s a very central location and I feel that if this happens it will be a much more suitable facility for usage with local community events,” he said.
“We have a great multicultural community who would love this.”
Cr Chowdhury moved the motion to investigate how the theatre could be built.
A report will be brought back to councillors in the coming months outlining the theatre’s feasibility.
