A man chucked a tantrum after a parking disagreement in a southwest Sydney shopping centre with CCTV catching him slashing a car’s tyres, a court has heard.
Cameron Byrnes, 26, pleaded guilty to intentionally or recklessly damaging property at Picton Local Court on Wednesday.
Court documents reveal that on March 14, a man drove to Mount Annan Shopping Centre and drove through an empty bay to park in the spot directly in front of Byrnes.
As he parked, Byrnes, who was driving a blue Mazda, attempted to reverse into the same spot before getting out of his car and yelling at the man.
“That was my parking spot,” Byrnes shouted before swearing and calling the victim names.
The man entered the shopping centre, where Byrnes approached him and said, “You have just had your tyres slashed”.
The victim returned to their car and saw that the tyres on the driver’s side were deflated with cuts about 20mm in length.
The next month, the victim reported the incident to police and officers obtained CCTV footage which showed Byrnes bending over behind the vehicle and slashing the two driver’s side tyres.
On March 20, officers traced Byrnes down to an address in Narellan Vale where he told them he could not recall an argument.
Police then informed Byrnes that a man matching his description and the vehicle he frequently drives was seen on CCTV slashing the tyres.
Byrnes told officers he feels annoyed when other vehicles drive through parking spots to enter another spot.
At court on Wednesday, a police prosecutor notified the magistrate they were seeking $622 compensation for the victim to cover the cost of the tyres.
Byrnes will be sentenced next month.
