CONSTRUCTION on Camden’s first ever day surgery is well underway, with the new facility set to open in early 2019.
To be known as the Camden Surgical Hospital, the multidisciplinary facility will cater for a range of specialist surgeries including ophthalmology, orthopaedic, neurosurgery, ENT (ear, nose and throat) and a range of others.
Located across from Elderslie High School, the Camden Surgical Hospital has 29 local surgeons signed on to use the facility.
Other local doctors have signalled an interest in using the facility.
Director Bruce Willmann said many local patients often have to travel out of the area for surgical services to Liverpool Hospital and beyond.
Mr Willmann said the Camden Surgical Hospital would reduce the need for people to leave the area.
“The issue for us is that there is just so much demand for health services in the area,” he said.
“The estimates are that a lot of people are travelling out of the area for surgical services and with all the growth coming its certainly something we thought we could be doing for Camden and the region.
“The Camden LGA is going to grow to nearly 250,000 people which is nearly three times the current level.”
Fellow director Dr Matthew Grey, who also works out of the neighbouring Schwarz Family Practice, said services catered for the mix of young families and elderly residents in the Camden region.
“ENT is part of the service we are able to offer and that is obviously a need for younger families and if you look at ophthalmology for some of our older residents they currently have to travel to Liverpool,” he said.
Dr Gray said the facility would seek to work with local GPs in an effort to get the best outcomes for its patients.
“It is something we want to integrate with all the general practices in the region, we’ve ensured that we’ve found experienced and exceptional surgeons, many of whom are already providing services locally and are known to local GPs,” he said.
“The principals and knowledge of a general practice will inform the way we work. We don’t want it to be seen as an extension of the Schwarz Family Practice because it is a separate entity.”
Mr Willmann said the facility would help surgeons working within to innovate their work.
The Camden Surgical Hospital is expected to be constructed by the end of the year with an opening date set for early 2019.
