A multimillion-dollar project to create a riverside recreational network is in the works in southwest Sydney.

The plan to connect the Nepean River to Camden Town Centre is a $5.1 million project funded by the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Project, and aims to enhance the community’s connection with the iconic waterway.

It will see the development of a recreational network completing missing links and creating several route options connecting the Nepean River to the main street via the Camden Town Farm, Fergusons Land and the Camden Bicentennial Equestrian Park.

The project will include a walkway along the Nepean River, viewing platforms along the Nepean River, a public art trail, heritage and environmental interpretation along the route, and exercise equipment to support active recreation at Fergusons Land cricket facility.

The public is now urged to have its say on the development.

According to the council, much of the community that will live in the Camden local government area in 2036 does not live there today.

In 14 years, the LGA is forecast to be home to a 119 per cent increase in population – more than a quarter of a million people.

The Camden area is one of the fastest growing areas in the country, and welcomes more than 100 new residents every week.

Mayor of Camden Therese Fedeli said it was important to have community feedback on the project that would cater to the growing region.

“Council is focused on providing the community with another fantastic walking track around one of our biggest assets in the Nepean River and we would love feedback from our residents,” she said.

“This project is about providing high quality open space for the Camden community to enjoy and there is no better place than along the Nepean.”

As part of the funding agreement, the council is required to commence construction works in February 2023 and conclude by December the same year.

The Nepean River Connect project will also realise objectives identified as part of the Camden Town Centre Urban Design Framework.

The project is on public exhibition until January 13, 2023.
