Call to improve highway ramps at Narellan Rd

Extending a merging lane and lighting up an important Hume Highway on ramp would improve safety and stop a potentially deadly accident, according to Campbelltown councillor Paul Lake.

Cr Lake wants to see the southbound merging lane connecting Narellan Rd to the Hume Highway extended and street lights on the northbound on ramp to improve safety.

Cr Lake said he had brought the issue up several years ago and was concerned that nothing had been done with the amount of construction work that had happened around the intersection.

“We’ve got more and more traffic going beyond the Narellan Rd intersection these days and the merging lane is quite short,” the independent councillor said.

“With all the traffic along there at certain times of day there are a lot of people merging into traffic because we have no Spring Farm Parkway connection yet.

“I know people who have caravans who will go to the Ingleburn ramp because it’s safer.”

Cr Lake said improving street lighting along the northbound exit ramp should also be a priority.

“There’s lighting at other exits all along the highway,” the former mayor said.

“With all the work being done I don’t see how that cannot be done as well.”

Cr Lake has put forward his proposal as a notice of motion at tonight’s Campbelltown Council meeting and if backed by fellow councillors, a letter will be sent to Roads Minister Melinda Pavey to request the upgrades.

He has also asked to have trees and bushes trimmed or removed that are covering up important road signs along the highway.
