When an expectant mother felt stomach pains, she didn’t think much of it after being told she had ben experiencing false labour pains when she visited the hospital the day before, and it was four weeks before her first child was due.
But after a call to triple-0 on September 12, the operator told Bargo’s Sarah Cambridge that she was in labour and it was time to start pushing.
“I had been to the hospital the day before because I thought I had contractions, but they sent home saying it was not time yet,” Ms Cambridge said.
“I had some complications during the pregnancy, including a blood clot, so they were going to induce me at 38 weeks, and since they said I could go home, I thought it was just stomach issues.
“It’s my first baby, so I didn’t think much of it.”
Her husband, Brad, was not home at the time as he was at the doctor’s for a check-up following a shoulder reconstruction.
After four hours of being uncomfortable, Ms Cambridge felt the urge to push and then thought she could feel the head. Feeling scared she called her mum, who told her to call triple-0 right away.
“I was in the baby room and put down towels on the bed, and I still didn’t think it was labour,” she said.
“The operator told me what to do, stayed with me, and told me the paramedics were on their way. They kept telling me I could do it.”
The paramedics were called at 10.16am, they arrived in three minutes, and the baby arrived at 10.28am in his now-bedroom.
“It was such a relief when they walked through the door, and the paramedic Caitlin held my hand, and then he was here,” Mrs Cambridge said.
“It was just crazy. I got to cut the cord, and it was so empowering because I did it with no pain relief, which I didn’t ever think I could do.
“I was just so thankful when they arrived because I felt safe knowing they were here to help and I wasn’t alone anymore.”
The paramedics got mum and bub ready to transport them to the hospital, even picking up the new dad outside the clinic after his medical check-up.
“I was in shock because it wasn’t meant to happen, not that early,” he said. “When they pulled up, I couldn’t believe it. It was all so crazy.”
The family reunited with the four paramedics who responded to the triple-0 call – Jen White, Olivia Hogan, Bob Taylor and Caitlin Reid – on Tuesday.
Ms Reid said it was an honour to be involved in such a special moment and said Ms Cambridge had done a fantastic job.
“You never know what you expect when you walk into the door,” she said.
“Sarah had done all the work and just needed some encouragement. It’s so lovely to see them again, and it’s exciting to follow up on jobs like this.”
