At 89 years of age, Betty Jean Wallace could be excused for putting the feet up.

Instead, the Picton-born Bargo resident continues to lend a helping hand and has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to people with a disability, and the community.

Mrs Wallace founded Wollondilly Riding for the Disabled in 1986 with her husband and has coached and supported about 700 people with a disability learn to ride a horse.

A Meals on Wheels life member after 44 years of service, as well as dedicating 48 years as a volunteer to the Tahmoor Bush Fire Brigade, Mrs Wallace said it was just second nature to help others.

“When people need a helping hand you just go out and help them,” she said.

“You don’t do it for what you are going to get out of it. You do it because it is giving someone pleasure.”

Mrs Wallace said she was thrilled and surprised to learn she would receive an OAM, and described the recognition as a lovely bonus.

“It’s quite an honour to receive recognition, there is no two ways about that.”
