Australian Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens hails from Penrith but the quadruple NRL premiership winning coach also has strong connections to Campbelltown.
The former Wests Tigers coach visited his former club Campbelltown City Kangaroos on Tuesday where he took the senior squads through a training session. The master coach was impressed with the players and enjoyed his return to his former club.
“The players were very receptive to what I was trying to get across,” he said.
“I don’t consider myself so privileged that I think I don’t have to give something back to the game. It’s a club and an area I know and love.”
Sheens has accepted a role with the club as patron and will return throughout the season for various events.
Club president Brian Brown said he was delighted to have Sheens involved.
“It’s great to have him here,” he said. “The players will learn so much.”
Sheens was presented with a lithograph montage of his time with the club.
He finished his high school career at St Gregorys College in 1967 and ’68, captaining the first grade rugby league team.
After his first grade career came to an end in ’82 with the Penrith Panthers, Sheens played one memorable season with the Campbelltown City Kangaroos.
During that season The Kangaroos won the Group 6 premiership and Sheens went on to represent Southern Division also winning the Caltex Cup.
“It was a year I enjoyed,” Sheens said. “We had a great bunch of guys and we played well and had a good year.”
It would be Sheens’ only first grade premiership during his playing days which included more than 250 games in all grades for Penrith.
