Airds residents have questioned the future of the Airds Village shopping centre following upgrades to other local shopping centres in the Macarthur region.
One Airds resident wrote to the Macarthur Chronicle asking what would happen to Airds Village as the residential area around it was redeveloped.
“With all the focus on Macarthur Square and the Ingleburn Village, there isn’t much attention on Airds, where the shopping centre has lost many of its retailers and fallen into disrepair.’’
A Family and Community Services (FACS) spokesman said the shopping centre was privately owned and did not form part of the Airds Bradbury Renewal Project.
Campbelltown Mayor George Brticevic said he was not aware of any plans for Airds Village as it was privately owned.
“It’s definitely not conducive with a pleasant shopping experience,” he said.
“Given the development happening around Airds people would be expecting things to improve.”
The FACS spokesman said planning for stage three of the Airds Bradbury Renewal Project had started.
Stage one and two subdivisions were completed in 2015 and 2016, with 35 social houses from stage one completed and 137 private houses under construction.
From stage two, construction of 97 private houses has started with 34 social houses to follow soon.
