A man has admitted to sinking six cans of VB before riding his dirt bike on an Oran Park road without a helmet or a licence, but with an 18-month old toddler in his lap.
At 6.45pm on February 12, Macarthur Highway Patrol spotted the 28-year-old man driving an unregistered dirt bike along Dick Johnson Drive in Oran Park.
Police noticed the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, wasn’t wearing a helmet and had an 18-month-old toddler in his lap who was only wearing a bicycle helmet.
Images from police bodycam footage showed the Cobbitty resident was wearing thongs, a light blue hoodie, and shorts at the time of the incident.
The toddler was left on the white and red dirt bike by himself as his father spoke to police on the side of the road.
After pulling the man over, police conducted a licence search which showed he was not licensed to drive a motorbike.
Checks also revealed the dirt bike was unregistered and uninsured.
A roadside breath test returned a positive result for alcohol, which is not surprising given the 28-year-old told police he’d been drinking five minutes before he hopped on the bike.
The Cobbitty resident told police he’d downed six 375ml cans of VB over an hour and a half, which is equal to 12 standard drinks.
At the police station, the man returned a breath test reading of 0.117 – more than twice the legal alcohol limit for drivers.
The toddler was collected by a parent while the cops took the man to the station. In a statement, Traffic and Highway Patrol said Family and Community Services had been notified of the incident.
The 28-year-old sent an email to Picton Court on Wednesday in which he pleaded guilty to mid range drink driving and unlicensed driving.
He was previously issued penalty notices for driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle while not wearing a helmet.
In a statement, Traffic and Highway Patrol described the man’s illegal actions as “ludicrous”.
He will be sentenced in Picton Court on March 9.
