The 11-year-old from Maraylya is entering Sunday’s 1km harbour swim to pay tribute to his Collaroy nippers coach Jake de Kort.
Jake’s sister Alana died of cancer in July last year.
Kieren said dedicating the event to the de Kort family was the least he could do to say thanks to Jake.
“Jake is a very cool coach that keeps us focused in training and competition,” Kieren said.
Kieren also had Alana in his thoughts when he claimed a bronze medal for rescue and resuscitation at the 2019 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships.
“In our state competition (Collaroy) were honoured to wear pineapple tattoos in memory of Alana, who was a much-loved Collaroy nipper,” Kieren said.
Kieren is this week’s Rouse Hill Times nominee for the 2019 Junior Sports Star award.
He is hoping to raise more than $2000 for The Children’s Cancer Institute during the Balmoral Swim for Cancer.
All funds raised from this year’s Balmoral Swim will go towards the Zero Childhood Cancer program — an initiative aimed at establishing Australia’s first ever personalised medicine program for children with high-risk or relapsed cancer.
