Through 60 years and 10,500-plus runs,Vinnie Cole’s love for Schofields Cricket Club has never waned.
The 73-year-old, of Riverstone, has played with the club every year since its inception in 1958, winning many premierships, and has been curator of its Oakville turf wicket for more than 25 years. “I just love it,” he said. “Cricket’s a team sport and you just want to keep doing one better for the team. It’s a great character builder and life builder, too.
“Schofields is one big family and I’ve never thought of playing anywhere else.”
A major factor in Cole’s longevity is the role he has taken on as a mentor.
“From 1980 on it sort of became about passing on my experience to the younger players,” he said.
“I’ve probably been able to help a few be a little bit better cricketers and act as a bit of a calming influence.”
Cole credited his love of the game and long career to his father, Gilbert, and the many friends he had made.
“I would also like to thank my wife Wanda,” he said.
“She was always very supportive of me — especially in the early years — and she’s been instrumental in allowing me to follow my pursuits for so long.”
