U9 Bankstown Sports baseball team storms through to premiership undefeated

IF YOU want to find the future of Australian baseball, look no further than the Bankstown Sports Baseball Club Magpies League team under-9s.

The young squad stormed through the 2016-2017 season as undefeated minor premiers before hoisting the premiership trophy. Showing incredible skill to come away without a single loss, the team is this week’s Local Sports Star nominee for Junior Sports Star Team.

Coach Tim Barry said several players in the team showed early signs of having the baseball IQ to play professionally one day.

“The kids did a few double plays throughout the season which I think is pretty unheard of for their age,” Barry said.

“A lot of 14-year-olds aren’t even doing that.”

Barry said the children were extremely dedicated, training multiple times a week during the season.

“We’re really proud of what they’ve done and hopefully they can continue that in the upcoming season.”

The 2017-2018 season starts in September.

Some of the team’s younger players will remain in the team while the older players will move onto older divisions.

Local Sports Stars has five categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Stars Team, Young Sporting Spirit ­Individual, Young Sporting Spirit Team and Service to Sport.
