Table tennis prodigy Alice Lee’s winning ways

Push-ups. Sit-ups. Running. State champion table tennis player Alice Lee does these drills and more as she seeks her next title.

A young teenager from Randwick has won the Queensland and ACT under-13s girls singles titles since she started playing three years ago.

Alice Lee, 13, is ranked the number three singles player for NSW under-21 women, and was one half of the NSW under-21s women’s doubles champions.

Alice shared some of her tips on how she goes about winning points.

“I usually serve short so they can’t attack before I do and I have an opportunity to win the point,” the St Catherine’s student said.

“I have to always be ready and prepared, so I always move around.

“You have to pay attention and watch the ball. You need good footwork.”

Alice trains at Sydney Olympic Park with the state squad to improve her game.

Push-ups and sit-ups are all part of the exercises, which Alice said can sometimes be exhausting.

Her training will ensure she is well prepared for the nationals in Wollongong this month.

Alice has won 33 medals in the sport, and would like to win 50.

She is a nominee for the Junior Sports Star individual honour at the Local Sports Stars Awards.

She started playing after her brother introduced her to the game.

“I really enjoyed it. It’s fun and you can play socially with your friends,” she said.

Local Sports Stars categories include individual, team of excellence, inspiration and service to sport.

The Junior Sports Star Individual, team and inspiration is for sporting people aged 18 and under.

For the individual category, nominees must have at least reached state level.
