Heading into the 2018/19 Little Athletics season, Rachel Bardney’s main goal was to qualify for the NSW team for this weekend’s Australian Little Athletics Championships in Hobart.

Following a brilliant competition season, the 13-year-old from Stanhope Gardens not only qualified for the state team, but she also impressed enough during the team training camp to be named team captain.

“Rachel is very honoured to have this privilege,” Rachel’s Mum Lisa said.

“She looks forward to leading the very talented team of NSW little athletes to victory at the end of the month.”

Rachel guaranteed her spot in the state team after dominating at the state championships in March.

She completed a clean-sweep of the competition’s throwing events, claiming gold medals in the shot put, discus and javelin.

Rachel then carried her strong form into the Australian Track and Field Championships in which she claimed another gold in javelin as well as silver in shot put and bronze in discus.

“Rachel competed in four events across four of the eight days,” Mum Lisa added.

“This was the largest annual athletics event in the Australia and Oceania — Pacific region and it brought together participants from all ages in the pursuit of personal bests and national championship medals.

“Rachel performed well in her four events with three personal bests and a national title.”

Rachel is a nominee for the 2019 Rouse Hill Times Junior Sports Star award.
