Remember the name Josh Curran, because before too long the young Patrician Brothers’ Blacktown student will be making headlines.
Josh may only be 17 years old, but he is already setting himself as a future front-rower for whichever lucky NRL club he chooses, at the moment it’s the Sydney Roosters.
“I’m signed as a Roosters junior,” Josh said.
“They’ve been really careful about my game load, so I’m not doing too may things that could see me injured for the next season.”
Along with his Roosters contract, Josh was also selected to represent the under 18s NSW Blues in the latest State of Origin. He ran on for the squad which saw the Maroons defeated in a clear 26-0 scoreline, which dad Dave Curran said is a sign of the future.
“I don’t think we need to be worried about origin wins in a few years,” he said. “The boys are making sure that we’re back on top.”
The side, coached by Blues legends Danny Buderus and Brad Fitler made Josh realise the intensity of the sport and strengthened his resolve to make it in a club and as a representative for NSW or Australia.
“It was a real eye-opener,” Josh said. “I think I’ll have to work on my mental toughness and make sure I’m able to put in the hours of training, because it’s going to be tough, but it’s good.”
Josh was selected for the side after putting in a successful season with the local Patties side GIO Schoolboys Cup and while he now has to start the real training with an NRL side, is excited about what the future holds.
“I just want to run on for the Roosters, that’s my only goal,” Josh said.
“Making my debut would be everything. I think playing for NSW was a chance to make my family proud and getting to play in the NRL that would top it off.”
Josh has been nominated as a local sports star in the individual category.
