HE’S the boy from Georges Hall that took on a Greek giant and lived to tell the tale — but make no mistakes, his story is no myth.
Noah Chami, 17, made his international boxing debut at the Thai Martial Arts Games in Bangkok earlier this year, a feat not lost on the teen who’s only spent five months training with Brotherhood Boxing in Greenacre.
“I put in heaps of hard work trying to get there because I know there’s only yourself to blame in the ring if you lose,” he said. “He was a tough opponent but I won a lot of the rounds and I really learnt a lot.”
Coach Keefe Alyatim has been impressed by Noah’s commitment. “He hasn’t missed a day of training,” he said. “They really make us proud here — when I first started the gym it was about giving kids options and it has really turned a lot of lives around.”
Chami is this week’s Local Sports Star nominee for Junior Sports Star Individual.
While the final referees call didn’t fall in Noah’s favour, he hopes to make the Youth Commonwealth Games, to be held later this year.
“I always try and stay positive — the nerves kick in when you’re in the dressing room but once the bell rings you’re fine,” he said.
Local Sport Star has five categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Stars Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual, Young Sporting Spirit Team and Service to Sport.
