YOUNG athlete Marli Mayne is as competitive as they come.
Once the starter pistol is fired she has only one objective: to win.
But once the race is run — whether she wins or loses — she shakes the hand of her opponent and congratulates or commiserates with them.
“We have a family principle to win gracefully and lose gracefully,” mum Bobbi Mayne said. “She has an incredible drive to win but she respects her opponents. We’re really proud of her.”
The eight-year-old athlete is the latest nominee for our Local Sports Stars in the Sporting Spirit category. She represents Eastern Suburbs Little Athletics Club and is already breaking club records.
Marli competes at the highest level for her age group — regionals — and recently came first in the 60m hurdles, third in long jump and third in the 100m. “My hero is Usain Bolt,” the Botany youngster said. “I love athletics, I just love running.”
When Marli’s not at the track she is representing South Maroubra Surf Life Saving or playing Oztag for Souths under 9s reps. Her team recently won the NSW State Oztag Championships in Coffs Harbour.
“She just loves sport and loves competing. But she also has this great attitude and we’re really proud of her,” Mrs Mayne said.
There are four other Local Sports Stars categories, Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Team and Service to Sport.
