PUNCHBOWL Boys High School, which has produced sporting greats throughout its history, is forging ahead in volleyball where the senior squad is one of the teams to beat in school competitions.
Rugby league’s Steve Folkes, cricket’s Jeff Thompson and Len Pascoe and Socceroo Garry Manuel are among the treasured alumni the school has nurtured, giving the current crop of players great motivation.
This week’ nominees for the Team Spirit award in the Local Sports Star Awards is the school’s volleyball squad who enjoyed another successful season.
The team, which won the schools grade competition two years ago, are boosted by a majority of Pacific Islander lads, including inspirational skipper Lucas Tekii.
Tdelii was rewarded for an outstanding season by being picked for the Bankstown Zone in the regional tournament.
He was a part of the team who won the 2019 Sydney South West Schools Sports Association regional tournament.
The team‘s rich streak this season has seen them defeat powerhouses, including Sefton High School and Chester Hill High School.
“(During the season), the boys train every lunch and recess and focus on building team chemistry more than anything else,”a school spokesman said.
“Most of the boys come from a Pacific Islander background and volleyball is a big sport in their community.
“Playing the sport for the school makes Punchbowl Boys’ High School feel even more like home.”
He said their biggest challenge was beating Chester Hill High School 2-1, to make up for their early season loss to them.
