HAVING a good attitude and supporting each other has made sporting success for one netball team all the sweeter.
Ashleigh Renton started coaching the Bankstown Sports team when they were in under-11.
“I took over when they were a B-grade team,” she said.
“Some of them hadn’t really had much netball experience and didn’t have the stronger skills.
“From the very get-go they were always a team that always supported each other and backed each other.”
Renton said the team built each other up and made it into the grand final, winning by one goal in extra time and moving up to the A-grade for their under-12 season.
“Their skills kept getting stronger and stronger as they got more familiar with netball,” she said.
“They played the grand final against a team that went through undefeated and ended up beating them.
“They’re extremely determined, they always know where each other is and have enough faith and trust in each other that they’re going to be there.”
The same happened in under-13 and under-14, with the girls winning the premiership.
But for Renton, it is their dedication to each other that has been most impressive.
“They hang out with each other on weekends,” she said. “I haven’t seen in a long time that a team just gels together.”
The girls, who have been nominated for the Local Sports Stars awards in the category of Young Sporting Spirit Team, are now sharing their culture with others, as two of the girls have been moved up into open competition and new girls join the core group in the under-15/16As.
The Local Sports Stars program has four other categories: Junior Sports Stars Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual, and Service to Sport.
