She’s set records on the track, but Paige Merriman’s feet are still planted firmly on the ground.
She’s set records on the track, but Paige Merriman’s feet are still planted firmly on the ground.
The 16-year-old athlete from Hinchinbrook is a nominee for the Local Sports Star awards in the Junior Sports Star category, which recognises outstanding achievements and dedication to sport.
Paige had a stellar 2018 season, winning bronze in the 3000m distance running event at the All NSW Schools championships.
She also qualified for the Australian Athletics Championships in the 2000m steeplechase, placing seventh against some of the top competitors in the country.
When she’s not training five times a week or competing on the track, Paige devotes her time and athletic ability to helping others.
The teenager has participated in the City2Surf for the past two years and has also taken part in the Balmoral Burn, raising money for charity. Mum Kathy said she was dedicated to her sport and always ready to congratulate her peers.
“She’s very humble in what she does, even with all the achievements,” Mrs Merriman said.
“She probably trains five to six days a week, running, swimming. She’s always there to congratulate kids at the end of a race.”
She said Paige would continue with athletics and “see where it takes her”.
The Local Sports Star competition is sponsored by Featherdale Wildlife Park and Bankstown Sports. Individuals and groups can be nominated.
