Surrounded by her family’s passion for baseball from a young age, it wasn’t long before Moorebank teenager Louise Matheson found the joy in the sport herself.
“I have been around baseball for so long because my Dad and brother have both played for a long time,” the 15-year-old said.
“They encouraged me to give baseball a try and I have loved it from then.”
Starting out as a rookie four years ago, Louise has firmly established her name in the game with a stack of achievements behind her.
This year she was selected for the NSW Metro team, representing the state at the national tournament, where they were victorious.
The team was undefeated throughout the tournament and won it.
Louise has also played for the Macarthur State Cup team and the NSW Country team.
She was a member of Chipping Norton Baseball Club for three years and has also played for Casula Lakers Baseball Club and Macarthur Women’s Orioles.
The teen said the highlight of her sporting career so far was playing at a national level.
“I learned so much training and preparing for it and the experience was amazing,” she said.
The pitcher, who also plays first base, wants to represent the country in the future and is considering a career in either baseball or teaching.
She described herself as an “encouraging team player” and thanked all those who have helped her get this far.
“I have had many amazing coaches and team mates who have got me where I am today and I am very thankful for all of them.”
Louise is this week’s nominee for the Local Sports Star award in the Junior Sports Star category. Nominate somebody at localsportsstars.com.au.
